Downtown Charleston’s historic Marion Square has been selected as the next stop in the U.S. leg of the global tour for Red Bull Illume, the world’s premiere action and adventure sports photography contest and exhibition.

The lights will turn on nightly March 18 - 27, from 7:00 pm-11:00 pm. A total of 50 photos will be on display in impressive light boxes that bring stature and significance to these works of art that capture the exuberant spirit of sport.

As sunset falls on Charleston on March 18th, a private gala ceremony will be held to open the ten day exhibit. While the gala ignites the exhibition, the public is welcome to come see the flipping of the switch at 8:00 pm as these stunning images illume the night sky.

The winners of Red Bull Illume were chosen by a jury of renowned photography experts. By illuminating these breath-taking photographs, we honor the photographers who’ve traveled, faced physical dangers, scaled buildings and navigated waves all to capture magical moments.

I get to hear the phrase "you don't act like you're from here" or "you stand out from the rest of these dudes" often. Its kinda offensive in a silly way, because I am from here and i came with these other dudes. But that's not what this post is about, and I'm going to use that phrase to describe the artist featured here. Skewby isn't like the 'others'. Memphis, TN has become known for the more street, trap music if you will. A city with such a rich musical culture can't be pigeonholed into one particular genre. Salute to the ones who paved the way in Memphis for it to recognized as a powerhouse; 8 Ball & MJG, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, Three 6 Mafia, Yo Gotti, etc. Following in the rich culture that boast country, jazz, juke joint music and rap comes Skewby. Not new to the game at all, but we want to make sure we do our part to put the good music out there.

So LeBron James signed with a team that didn't draft him into the league...he's not the first to do that and not the last. But this post is more so about the iconic brand NIKE that has once again been called upon to 'clean' the image of one of its endorsers. Like that of the ad with Tiger Woods, they have done what any "loyal" brand should do. They are sticking by their "bread and butter" even when some other fair-weather companies jump ship. But that's all my opinion. I must agree that NIKE has one of the best Total Quality Control systems in place. Is NIKE also a management firm on the low?

In celebration on Twitter's #MusicMonday I thought I would post a throwback and compare it to the newer version. Like many things music has trends. One of the old school crooners composed a song entitled "I Miss You" circa 1994. This was when videos were released way after the original song was heard. Anyone you ask will tell you they didn't have a clue that the video would depict a love lost to death. Even in the lyrics he says "...then you said you had to go, whats wrong..." *Sniff* As the listener you get the impression that he messed up. In the next verse "i thought you'd be with me forever, but I guess someone took my place..." Now you're thinking she was triflin'. Once the video was released, I remember seeing it on Video Soul, even the most gangster of thugs got choked up watching her wheeled thru the hospital pregnant on the gurney...(i need a moment)

Move forward 16 years... Trey Song who was 10 when the "I Miss You" video was released did a video for "Your Side of the Bed". He came very strong with the content and production. It was exclusively released on Essence website and had Twitter a buzz. As a music fan I am always glad to see the artistic side shine through in videos. From the opening sequence with Miss Keri Baby the video grabs you. I'm no expert by any definition of the word, but this is one of the better videos of 2010.

Salute to both artist who didn't think it was "soft" to show they miss their 'Boos'.

We here at the Suite Life Agency have had the distinct honor of working with one of the only Academy Award winning rappers...in history. Other than Jordan Houston and Paul Beauregard, Cedric Coleman (professional name Frayser Boy) is the only other rapper to have the coveted award in his collection. At the 78th Annual Academy Awards the Memphis rapper was honored with the gold Oscar statue for his writing work on the Hustle and Flow soundtrack for the song "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp". Fast forward about 5 years and into the present all the glitz and glamour has faded away. Part of the ugliness of the industry is that sometimes things don't always seem as they really are. But through it all, he's still breathing.

To say the least I have learned quite a bit about what happens at the conference tables and how information is key to success in this industry. It really is about the more you know. A fresh start with Money By Da Pound Records, LLC. has revitalized the career of Frayser Boy who released his last album on the Hypnotized Mind label Da Key. It's the follow up to his earlier releases "Me Bein' Me" and "Gone on That Bay". Most recently Frayser Boy has added to his mixtape series Da Streets Need with a volume 3 co-hosted by Memphis own DJ Rocksteddy and Muzikfene, and Cartune Netwerk. Frayser Boy and DJ Scream teamed up again to produce the newest mixtape titled 'Still Breathing'. Its more like a declaration that no matter what trials he has encountered he's still breathing.

I had the distinct honor of being invited to one of the most extraordinary aspiring artist from the Holy City since those Hootie and the Blowfish folks...at the last minute. Of course I will not harp on that at all. (I said what I had to say the day of the shoot via post on facebook and twitter.) Besides Mr. Hustle himself was also kind enough to address the issue on camera for us. Anyway as I was saying about a distinct honor and best out fro my city since Hootie dem...not to take away from any other artist who have gone on to accomplish some very amazing career goals, I'm merely voicing my opinion about a favorite of mines.

Mr. Hustle is actually the name of the song he was shooting the video for. He being Righchus. Album being Chaos Theory. Yes he has album available for download or hard copy from Amazon or iTunes. That in and of itself separates him from the rest of his class. Add to it his rap subjects, Supras, no guns or drugs, and you have somewhat a sore thumb coming from these parts. The southern drawl and slight hint of "geechie-ness" can be detected so that makes it authentic.

I never really concerned myself or wasted energy on any of the "is the group breaking up?", "what's wrong with Andre?" Or any of that "extraness". I just appreciated them sharing their gift in whatever capacity they decided they wanted to. I was fully anticipating the solo release from Big Boi. And in true Southerplayalisticadillacmuzik fashion the new album don't disappoint. As a matter of fact I would even say adamantly that OUTKAST HAS NEVER HAD A LESS THAN STELLAR ALBUM. If I said something wrong...pop me in the mouth. This solo effort is a CLASSIC. The teaser a few years ago 'Somethings Got to Give' was enough to keep real fans wondering when the full album was to be delivered. The double disc (or cassette depending where you were upon its release) was a smash hit. It really was one of the best deals ever as you got two great albums for the price of one. Fast forward to 2010 and the first singles Tangerine and Shine Blockas sounded like a teacher schooling a pupil. Not in a demeaning manner but in a southern "I see ya Shawty" type way. That's respect.

My favorite group all-time. I recall buying the first album as a cassette and eventually on CD. They were some of the forerunners who turned Atlanta into the new hub for all things musical and entertaining. I wouldn't even torment myself with the thought of "what would music from the South be like if there were no Outkast".

On the album a few singles to pay close attention to are 'Your DJ ain't No DJ', 'Shine Blockas', as well as the remix ft. Bun B, Project Pat, and Gucci Mane. 'Be Still' featuring Janelle Monae is hopefully one of many collaborations between the two. (Tightrope was very fresh and I keep hearing that Janelle made a cameo in the 'Bombs Over Baghdad video) The signature song has got to be General Patton. (when you get the album you'll fully understand)

DIPT NYC...a revolution of personal experience

As the heat of the Southern Summer continues to rise a few things remain as staple remedies. Ice cream is one of those. So mix that with the love of fashion particularly the ones proper for this time of the year and you got a perfect blend. The filming of Righchus 'Mr. Hustle' video was by invite only and one of the Street(wear) Kings of Charleston was in attendance. I got a moment to ask a few questions about whats been going on in the parlor. The brand is DIPT NYC as the owner spends time and draws influences from the NYC as well as the Holy City of Charleston, SC.

Side note: I was actually a part of the Summer X Collection photoshoot done by BadJon Photography. Definitely checkout the site for updates and to shop at the store. I would also like to mention that the hand painted, one and done special designs the Ice Cream Man use to do were very fresh and would be greatly appreciated if a "comeback" was made to the limited edition items.

Without bragging I'll say this, ask anyone else who was nominated in the Best Lyricist category. Mike was a very talented aspiring artist. His presence will always remain through his music.

Sold to and Serviced...

Today this phrase crossed my mental "sold to but not serviced". While driving around I ended up behind a dream car of mines, Cadillac XLR, and started thinking about how manufacturers target the proper demographic for their products. Particularly a brand like General Motors their luxury Cadillac division has to take into consideration the current buyer as well as the future buyer, ie. the person who gets one of their vehicles used or pre-owned. I mention Cadillac because they are one of the few brands that has gotten the marketing right across many different and particular groups. From the older Seville drivers to the younger CTS drivers. Likewise they made a killing with a Tahoe in a tuxedo, the Escalade. But I got to thinking abut the price point of their vehicles and the largest group of admirers ability to swing such a large sum. My conclusion is they are still partially amongst the "sold to but not serviced" industry people.

The phrase is borrowed from one of my clients KJtheGreat over at H1gher Learning. Generally referred to when explaining the thought process behind some product development and release. (1o Deep, Leather fitted hats, sweatshirts in summer heat stuff, etc.) In any economic times its always wise to maintain a brand distinction without completely ostracizing any potential buyers. Of course luxury brands have a certain level of standards to sustain so they purposely out price their products from the little people. While working on some projects I began to do some research on some of the better marketing schemes. MacDonalds is one of the best. They have sold billions of burgers by doing direct marketing. Odd how a kid in Beijing and another in Charleston may both like those little golden fried nuggets and tiny packet of the greatest fries on Earth!

One brand that as of recent has caught my attention is Supra Footwear. I'm pretty new to them overall. Seemingly with their newest release of their Pilot line. The Seersucker material was really all I paid attention to. In the south that screams Southern Gentlemen. Checkout the post by Dipt NYC's ICE CREAM MAN which gives a little history about the fabric. Supra definitely got it right with this one. The South has been SOLD TO and SERVICED! I greatly appreciate a product that hits the nail on the head and makes a useful, stylish product without being ridiculous or silly.

Now all that's left is for me to find a retailer in my area who is carrying it...

Technically speaking what the folks over at Visualive are doing will knock your socks off. Figuratively speaking of course. They have a plan to innovate marketing and advertising in a way that seems obvious but hasn't been ventured into as of yet. I've had the honor of hanging out with these guys, Will and Josef, on a few occasions. They are very passionate about what they are working on and we believe it will definitely make a mark in how we do things. I look forward to working with them on some future projects. To be completely fair I will make it known that the promise for a new download was fulfilled...Mix 7-10-10 was delivered with 20 minutes of riding music.

DJ R Dot, better known behind the turntables as The College Kid has been known to literally shut clubs down. As in the owner of the club would have to end a party early because the venue was not adequate to maintain the crowd attracted. Seems like a problem more owners would love to have. I have had the fortune to be present when he really goes in. More often than not nowadays DJs are not held accountable for keeping the party going. If you're anything like myself you may have noticed that some DJs are traveling solely with MAC computers or iPods. That's not DJing, that's pressing play! I even thought about figuring out a cool DJ name and booking a few shows for myself. (There are some very good DJs out there and in the Holy City) But thats not the case with The College Kid. As a matter of fact there is always one particular mix of Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" lyrics is perfectly blended with Rick Ross's Hustlin' beat and hook...yeah doesn't sound like it would work, huh. Well in the words of Andre 3000 "it all blended perfectly, let the liquor tell it". Anyway, in between filming at the videoshoot for Righchus' Mr. Hustle I got a moment to catch up with one of my favorite DJs to get somewhat of an exclusive on what he's up to.

Today I lost a very dear friend, client and business partner. Its goes without saying that times like these are very difficult to deal with. The picture posted is the very picture from our first meeting. If memory serves me I asked for a particular song heard on the local radio station. My intention was to have him email it to me. To my amusement he pulls out a lanyard which housed about 4 or 5 jump drives. Immediately I laughed at him. I'm sitting behind my desk wondering "What rapper is walking around with a pocket full of jump drives?" Later I'd be able to say my friend and client Dirty Mike. After this meeting and from a recommendation of Money By Da Pound Records CEO Jay Johnson, Mike asked me to personally manage him. In truth I was very honored, because I was initially impressed with his lyricism before ever realizing his work ethic. Unrivaled by anyone I personally know, his drive and passion for his craft made it easy to work the extra hours on projects.

I always remember the energy he brought to any situation. Whether recording in studio or just hanging out, he was the life of the party. Anyone who knows him has a "funny story" about Dirty. He put on a show. I hate and regret not having been able to do more to help him see his Dream through.

Last night on ABC News Nightline Sean "Diddy" Combs was interviewed by Martin Bashir in a segment titled "The Modern Mogul'. For everyone who is familiar with me personally you know the admiration* I have for the man and the brand. Bad Boy Records and the work it took to build it is nothing short of incredible. (I would love to verify the story about him buying a Range Rover with one of his first big checks prior to a major business meeting) The way he structured the distribution deal for Bad Boy Records in the early years, around '94 when Clive Davis purchased 50% stake was so innovative. His visibility was necessary for the strength of his brand. He knew that in the early years and made it work. 15 years later aspiring record label owners, aspiring artist, restaurateurs, clothiers, and entertainment managers who have any inkling of sense all mention Sean Combs as an inspiration. When he started his own clothing line Sean John, I personally know a "struggling" college student who bought a white tank top for $23...for her boyfriend. That's got to be quality. When he said he was opening a restaurant some people doubted that Justin's would be successful and many years later its still a destination eatery in Atlanta, GA. He continued to push the envelope with his venture into fragrances I Am King and Unforgivable. One endeavor he doesn't get as much credit for, but one of the most impressive to me is his Blue Flame Agency. When we thought he was just starving for attention when dancing in videos and saying "Yeah" on some of the most memorable tracks he was actually driving prices up and making corporate America take notice. The list of clients the Blue Flame Agency boast is beyond a who's who of successful global businesses.

There truly is a lot to learn from Diddy. In my era there are very few who have made such an impact across so many genres and remain relevant from start to now. Take notice during the interview with Martin Bashir how cool he remains when the question get edgy and oftentimes bordering on disrespectful. That aire of calm only comes from many years of cultivation. Likewise take notice of the product placement throughout the interview. Multiple shots of Diageo's Ciroc Vodka which is endorsed by Diddy himself through a a strategic partnership. The point of it all is that clearly Mr. Combs explained many years ago that he wouldn't stop.

Just a quick heads up about the newest business deal. By no means will I compare anything I do to the extraordinary level of that of Sean Combs just yet, but I will use the analogy here. (see his newest partnership with the BAWSE) In what I believe to be one of the deals that will be most memorable in my professional career a few days ago, about a week or more by now, KJ the Great became the newest client of the Suite Life Agency. This "partnership" has the potential to do quite a bit for our beloved city of Charleston, SC and the culture that lies in wait to be exposed and appreciated. As the founder and curator of H1gher Learning he (KJ) has taken on the task of "intellectually documenting the culture of Southern Streetwear". It goes way beyond tees, jeans, fitted hats, and funky sneakers. Stay tuned.

Dirty Mike born Mike Goins, was raised in South Memphis, TN. (Memphis 10)Ever since a juvenile he’s been doing his thing in the streets. His ambitions in the music industry began at the age of 13. When he moved to Orange Mound he began taking things more seriously and really put his mind on rapping. His motivation came from his personal life struggles and a desire to prove people wrong. Some people recognized his natural ability for word play while others took it for a joke. As he gained local notoriety through the release of numerous mixtapes and collaborations his career took another direction when he met DJ 007 at the radio station (Hot 107.1) during a freestyle battle competition. At the end of it all he was crowned “Freestyle King of Memphis”. Dirty Mike has released three solo mixtapes. His debut release, I Declare War, made a major impact on the Memphis music scene in 2005. This lead to his signing to Money By Da Pound Records, LLC. A new label at the time that would continue to make Memphis a region to be reckoned with in the music industry. After signing to Money By Da Pound Records, Dirty was exposed to a whole other part of “the rap game”. Teaming up with CEO of MBP Records J. Johnson, Dirty Mike released his second mixtape entitled Money, Power, and Respect. Dirty Mike has worked with many of the music industry well-knowns such as Young Juve (So So Def), Grammy Award Winning Carlos Broady, Yo Gotti (TVT Recording Artist), Lil Boosie, Fabo of D4L, Bun B (UGK), and many other platinum artists. Dirty Mike has been featured in many industry publications such as The Ozone Magazine, Concrete, Murder Dog and Street Masters. Dirty Mike is currently working on his debut nationwide release “Game Over, I Win”.
